Small, equal-sized wings shed in a pile near a window mean insects swarmed and then dropped them. For termites that matters: only a colony mature enough to reproduce produces swarmers, so the wings say it has been there a while.

Why it will not stop on its own

The swarm is the visible moment of something older. Colonies do not swarm in their first season. Finding the wings is finding the colony late, not early.

Wings indoors point inside. A swarm that shed its wings against an interior window came from inside the structure, not from the garden.

They are easy to mistake for flying ants, and the difference matters because the treatments are unrelated. Keep a few in a sealed bag or take a close photograph.

What the visit involves

An inspector works out where the swarm came from, which usually means finding the point they emerged: a gap at a window frame, a joint in the eaves, a crack near a foundation.

From there it is the same two questions as any termite job: which species, and how far it has gone. Pellets nearby point to drywood; mud on masonry points to subterranean; the two are treated in completely different ways.

Common questions

Are they termites or flying ants? Termite wings are all the same length; an ant's front pair is longer. It is easier to check on a photograph than in the moment.

They swarmed once and stopped. Is it over? Swarming is seasonal and brief. The colony does not stop when the swarm does.

Do I need to do anything today? Keep a few wings and photograph where they were. That is the evidence, and vacuuming it away first is the common mistake.
