Why it will not stop on its own

Garages give them exactly what they want — dark, dry, undisturbed and out of the wind. So do woodpiles, meter and irrigation valve boxes, the underside of outdoor furniture and the corner of a shed.

The web is the tell. A black widow's web is a strong, irregular tangle, not a symmetrical wheel, and the spider hangs beneath it and hides when disturbed.
