Why it will not stop on its own

The ones in the open are a small share. The rest are in the voids: the motor housing of the fridge, under the dishwasher, inside cabinet hinges, around the sink plumbing. Those are warm, dark and near water, which is everything they need.

If they are in the kitchen at night, it is probably the indoor species. The German cockroach lives and breeds indoors permanently. It did not come from the garden and it will not leave on its own.

Spraying makes it worse. Repellent products push a contained population out of one harbourage and into others — into the wall voids, and in an apartment, toward the neighbours. Bait is what works, and it has to go where they actually shelter.

What the visit involves

A technician opens the places you do not: behind and under the appliances, the cabinet voids, the plumbing penetrations. The droppings there — like ground pepper — and the shed skins say how large the population is and roughly how long it has been building.

Gel bait goes into those voids. A return visit follows, because eggs already laid are not affected by the first treatment and the ones that hatch have to be caught too.

Common questions

Does it mean the kitchen is dirty? No. They arrive in cardboard, grocery bags, second-hand appliances and furniture, and they stay wherever there is water.

Why are there small pale ones? Those are nymphs, and they mean the population is breeding where it is rather than wandering in.

Will one visit do it? Not for the indoor species. The follow-up is part of the treatment, not a sign the first one failed.
