How to get rid of cockroaches

The German cockroach is the one that matters. Small, light brown, two dark stripes behind the head. It lives indoors permanently, breeds indoors, and is found in kitchens and bathrooms — close to warmth, water and food. It does not come in from the garden. It arrives in something carried in and then multiplies.

The others are outdoor insects that wandered in. Turkestan and oriental cockroaches live in irrigation boxes, drains, planters and under debris. They come in under a door or through a gap, one at a time, usually at night and usually after watering.

The distinction changes the whole job. An outdoor roach is a perimeter and exclusion problem. A German cockroach indoors is a population that has to be baited out, and it takes weeks rather than one visit.

Spraying a German infestation makes it worse. Repellent products push them out of one harbourage and into others, spreading a contained problem through the walls. Gel bait is what works, placed where they actually shelter.

What the visit involves

A technician looks in the places roaches shelter rather than the places you see them: the motor housing of the fridge, under and behind the dishwasher, the hinge void of cabinet doors, around the sink plumbing.

The evidence there tells which species and roughly how large the population is — droppings that look like ground pepper, shed skins, and the egg cases.

Bait goes into those voids. Then a return visit, because the ones that hatch after the first treatment have to be caught too.

Common questions

Does it mean the house is dirty? No. German cockroaches arrive in cardboard, grocery bags, used appliances and furniture. They stay where there is water, and every kitchen has water.

Why did the spray from the shop not work? For the indoor species, repellent sprays scatter the population rather than reducing it, and the ones you cannot see are the majority.

How long does it take? Weeks, not hours, and the follow-up is part of the treatment rather than an extra.

Who to call

Call and say where you see them, at what time of day, and whether they are in the kitchen and bathroom or turning up near an outside door. That last detail usually settles which species it is.
